Lords is different. Most places, they're voted for, and yeah, there's accountability. And corruption. But then who gets to vote, or be voted for, there were blocks on that.
Think smaller. Think... you and me are stood next to each other, and we both ask someone for the same thing. Whoever we're asking, they let me have it because I'm a guy, and ignore you or tell you that you wouldn't know what to do with it, because you're a woman. Or maybe they let you have it because you're rich, and ignore me or tell me I'd break it, because I'm poor.
It is good to understand, thank you. John explained some, and said it is why many of the Void-Touched had such contention to the matters with the villagers. Not that they had no right to feel their distrust, their pains are valid, but why they felt there could be no recourse to peace with them.
... I had some questions to the matter, but I felt it was not best to press them with John himself.
I'm not going to pretend like I don't deserve it, sometimes. But I don't think you've ever said anything that anyone should be telling you to shut up about.
When you are Queen, and not one that is considered good at your task, you hear it differently.
'My lady, do you think you should speak with Tsar First-Child a time, before you speak on such matters openly? Perhaps counsel should be taken first?'
'Your Majesty, we have deferred to your lady mother's guidance at this time, as she has done this matter before and we did not wish to waste your time.'
'Tsarina Gilia, we think it best to not regard that matter at this time until you have given it appropriate thought.'
And my ever favorite: 'Do not trouble yourself this way, Second-Child, it is already in hand.'
It is envious at times, to see people so direct in their decisions, I must admit.
The people who make up our guards - they are the only ones allowed weapons on our isle, they are ancient warriors, and as such, settle matters by combat.
The Sagas always made fights seem so long, I was shocked the first of their duels I ever saw, that - it all happened so quickly. A man was dead, the matter apparently decided, and they moved on as if that was all there was to say on it.
It made me wonder if my mother was right, if she had beat me as her father did, would I be better at making choices, if I had known such swift consequence?
Your father was a good man, his memory should be honoured, it was a cruel thing for her to tarnish that sacrifice, however badly it might have ended.
My mother did not say it to be cruel to me, only to wish me to be strong, like all parents wish for their children, but as rulers we must know accountability. She agreed with what you say, but she is not a... a soft spoken woman, that way, so it did always come out harshly.
[ see??? Nothing to worry about- ]
She of course need not have worried, my brother was always truthful with me, and he made sure to teach me those lessons of consquence so I was not spoiled as a Princess. He was very fair, that way.
Yeah, and my mom was sad, and grieving, and blamed me because it was easier than dealing with whatever she was trying to drown. And it killed her in the end anyway.
I get it, your mom and my mom were both human. Doesn't mean they didn't screw up.
[ It's hard not to feel protective and defensive of her mother, the head of their house, in truth, since it certainly was not Gilia.
But she just said she appreciated Murphy's honesty, and knee jerk as the reaction was, she would not be that much of a hypocrite. ]
I suppose I never thought of it as that.
This is just how matters are, in noble families, most often. We say it is to counter how we are given so much, we must hold each other to even higher account.
That's bullshit, Gilia. I'm not saying you should get to just let it go to your heads and be assholes, but you don't have to be cruel to kids to teach them that.
That doesn't mean you're wrong. Sometimes people do things, and they need to do them, things are crap enough that they make sense. But that doesn't mean they always will, and it doesn't mean they were ever good.

That there are those that are like myself in that - they have great reach in power over others.
And people in your lands have to... accept it? With little accountability to their... Lords, so to speak?

You may speak in ire, at times, or speak bluntly, but you speak often to balance both good and bad.
Any ruler would know you to be worth your weight in gold, and I certainly appreciate your wisdom and your view on much of that which we talk.
... And you also, do not tell me to... 'Shut Up'.

Your mom shouldn't have said that, either. Hitting kids isn't going to make them better at anything except being hurt and scared.
cw: more domestic abuse and class structure abuse

I do not... I am not sure what to say? It is all framed differently at home. It is about tests and strength and what must be endured.
